We ordered 50 chicks from Sunnyside via Complete Feed in Sharon. They were all cockerel and it seemed like most were boys. We butchered 2 days short of 8 weeks old, so I am impressed with our totals. Last year they were a week and a half older and were only about 4 oz heavier.
Totals: Ordered 50, got 50, 1 died at 2 days old, another died shortly after, both due to smothering, one in a rain storm. Another was about to die, so I quickly butchered it, skinning, and taking off the wings. It was 4lb, 4oz and is not included in the totals.
47 chickens, something like $2.60/bird now.
total weight: 363lbs, 4 oz
average of 7lb, 11oz/bird, not counting any organs.
hearts 1lb, 13 oz
gizzards 4lb, 4oz
liver 6lb, 12oz
Total spent: $500.66
chicks $141.49
feed (non gmo feed from Jack and Dicks) 359.17 (something like 17-18 bags total, most of one bag left)
Meat cost: $1.38/lb
Including organs: $1.33/lb
We started at 6:50 (gutting started at 7) and were done, with all birds dressed by 9:10. Cleaned up for about 30 minutes, then went in and showered. Started working on organs, final bird cleaning, bagging, and freezing. Finished that by 2:30ish with a very short break for lunch. We had a 13 year old hatcheting with me holding birds and also dipping them. Dad was on the plucker, and we had 1 adult, a 17 year old and a 15 year old gutting. Hubby took off legs and helped where he could. They could basically keep up with the killing, dunking, plucking. It is important to have someone helping keep the birds in the hot water. No real issues with cooking them, a few broken wings, but not many.
